Visa Extension

You must apply for a visitor’s record to extend your stay in Canada. The expiry date on your visitor record will mean that you have to leave Canada or apply for an extension. Important to remember that having a visitor record doesn’t guarantee you can re-enter Canada after you leave the country.

You can stay in Canada if your visitor visa expires during the extension application process. This is called “maintained status” and was previously known simply as “implied status”.

What length of time can you stay in Canada for?

Individuals who want to visit Canada for a short-term purpose (such as tourists, foreign workers or students) must apply for and receive a TRV, unless they are citizens from a country that is exempted from visa requirements. The majority of visitors can stay for six months in Canada.

When they enter Canada, those who are issued a stamp must return it by the expiration date. A visitor record issued must be returned to Canada by the date on the visitor record.

If the passport is not stamped, foreign nationals cannot remain in Canada longer than six months after their entry.
